Introduction to the Inner Child

I’d like to take a moment to write about the inner child.

While there’s so much to say about this topic, it’s well-established now — in many psychological circles — that at different stages in life, we take on beliefs, attitudes, and emotions… and those younger states of being still exist in our subconscious mind, often below our awareness.

We are multidimensional beings.
As we experience life as a child, it’s as if that part of ourselves is still operating in the present, influencing our day-to-day lives — even though we now live in a more mature body.

In fact, I’ve personally seen many layers of inner children — at many different ages and stages — show up in my own work.
It’s quite interesting when you get them all in the same room!

There’s a lot to explore, but this post is just a brief intro into this type of work.

The first step of inner child work is awareness:

To see, feel, or acknowledge them.

It’s helpful to approach them with a full heart and a sense of curiosity.

A Brief Exploration

Begin with your favorite breathwork or meditative stance.

Imagine — and breathe — lots of golden, warm light radiating through the body and filling your space. It grows with every breath.

Now, with a few deep breaths, imagine yourself in a beautiful safe place.

A personal haven.

Whether that’s a wooded clearing or a sacred indoor temple, this is a special sanctuary of healing.

See yourself there and breathe into the experience. You can take as long you need.

Now imagine that nearby, your inner child is invited in this space with you.

Allow yourself to notice:

  • How are they doing?

  • Are they saying or feeling anything?

  • What kind of energy or presence do you feel?

Next, breathe deeply and

Mentally reach out and thank them for being there.

How do they respond to this thanks?

Breathe into the experience.

This connection may be a subtle, but important, sensation.

Now — breathe and beam that golden, warm light toward your inner child circling and surrounding, and protecting them.

Let it soothe and heal them, offering whatever is needed in that moment.

Notice what happens as you offer them this energy.

Now, you can take the work in any direction that feels right or

simply thank them again with the promise to come back soon.

And when you're ready, gently bring yourself back to full awareness.

At this point, you’ve:

  • Established a connection with your child

  • Shown them a safe space to be

  • Introduced a healing energy into their experience

Well done.

And truly — congratulate yourself, and your inner child, for going through this process together. More to come.
